While the staff of the Cochrane and Area Humane Society (CAHS) is still reeling over the theft of a few hundred dollars worth of recyclables, the kindness of their supporters has provided a bright spot.

About $200 in recyclables was taken from outside of the shelter’s main entrance during the night of Dec. 21. The containers and bottles were being collected as part of the humane society’s Containers for Critters program, which uses the funds from recycling to support the rescue and rehabilitation of animals.

By Christmas Eve, donors helped the CAHS make up for the loss — and then some. Between monetary donations, supply donations and credits for Royal Canin pet food, the shelter has rebounded with a tally of more than $500, said Cheryl Wallach, spokesperson for the CAHS.

That’s on top of the bottle donations filling the collection bin.

“We just have to extend a big ‘Thank you’ to everyone who has helped fill this gap,” Wallach remarked. “There is just such amazing community support for our animals.”

As for the Containers for Critters collection bin, it is now being locked away when the shelter isn’t open.

“We just can’t work on the honour system anymore,” said Wallach.

Wallach said that while the missing $200 may not seem like a lot of money, the amount goes a long way at the shelter.

“That’s enough to cover the cost of a 10-day stay for a homeless cat,” she added.

Recyclables can be directly donated to the CAHS’s Containers for Critters program during the shelter’s regular business hours.
