For Calgary-based roots artist, T. Buckley, the last three years have seen him focusing on fine-tuning his sound and set list, building a solid team with his fellow trio members and never forgetting that every time he straps on his Martin DM, it’s all about making connections.

This trip to Cochrane will see the T. Buckley Band on the Legacy Guitar and Coffee House stage on Nov. 30 at 8 p.m.

Fans of T. Buckley’s Alberta-rooted songwriting will be celebrating the group’s recent sophomore album release, Northern Country Soul, funded through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

“You could probably find a lot of similar themes on this record as the last…I’m still pretty rooted in and inspired by western Canadian themes,” said Buckley, operating under the large blanket called ‘roots’ – a little bit of rock, a good shot of country and that singer/songwriter pull that is central to folk music tradition.

“This time around, I was working more closely with Tim (Leacock) and Derek (Pulliam)…they played a big role in this record.”

With Leacock on lead guitar and mandolin and Pulliam on his antique stand-up bass, Buckley feels the trio carries a full-bodied sound, becoming a tight unit over the last three years.

“When you have solid guys committed to the project you work with them more on the tunes — bringing it to them right away to work on arrangements instead of right before you get into the studio,” explained the singer/songwriter, who feels his songwriting has grown tremendously since Roll On (2010).

Calgary and area audiences seem to agree. His Nov. 8 album release at always-popular live music venue, the Ironwood Stage and Grill went over so well that a second album release party will be held at Wine-Ohs in Calgary on Nov. 29.

The trio is looking at taking their western sound to the international stage in the near future.
