Town of Cochrane proclaims Metis Week and Louis Riel Day.

Cochrane Town Council has proclaimed that November 12 to 18 will be recognized annually as Métis Week in Cochrane. This year it will include Louis Riel Day on November 16th.

Cochrane Town Council has proclaimed that November 12 to 18 will be recognized annually as Métis Week in Cochrane. This year it will include Louis Riel Day on November 16th.

This is a significant year with the newly formed and elected Otipemisiwak Métis Government of the Métis Nation within Alberta, creating District 4 - Rocky View in the Battle River Territory. 

The Métis people, a recognized nation within the Canadian Constitution, have made significant contributions to Canadian society and culture.

“We encourage all citizens of Cochrane to learn more about the Métis People and the important role they play in the history of our town, province, and country,” the Town’s release stated.

Proclamation:

Whereas: The Métis culture, rich in spiritual beliefs and colorful traditions is an integral part of

                  Cochrane’s multicultural character.

Whereas: Métis people have had a long presence in Cochrane and southern Alberta.

Whereas: November 16th is Louis Riel Day, a national Métis holiday commemorating the death

                  of Métis leader Louis Riel.

On behalf of Town Council and the citizens of Cochrane, I hereby proclaim the week of

                  November 12–18th as:

                  Métis Week and the day of November 16th, 2023, as Louis Riel Day.
