Update
A partnership between the RCMP Historical Homicide Unit (HHU) and the Calgary Police Service Cold Case Homicide Unit has led to charges in a 47-year-old homicide.
16-year-old Pauline Brazeau was a young Métis woman, and single mother, who hailed from Saskatchewan. In the fall of 1975 Pauline relocated to Calgary with her infant daughter. On Jan. 9, 1976, Pauline was last seen leaving Peppe’s Ristorante, in the area of 7th Street and 17th Avenue, Calgary, at approximately 3 a.m. A few short hours later, Pauline’s body was discovered outside of Calgary, in Cochrane RCMP jurisdiction. An autopsy determined her cause of death to be a homicide.
Pauline’s murder was one of many that occurred in the Calgary area during the late 70’s and early 80’s. By 1995, the RCMP formed a task force that re-investigated these unsolved homicides, including Pauline’s. Despite extensive investigative efforts Pauline’s file remained unsolved, but the police never gave up hope..
On Nov. 7, 2023, police arrested 73-year-old Ronald James Edwards, a resident of Sundre, Alta., in relation to this investigation. Edwards has been charged with murder as it was defined in the Criminal Code in 1976. At the time, Canadian law declared murder to fall under two categories, capital and non-capital murder. As such, Edwards was charged with non-capital murder, as it appeared in the Criminal Code in 1976.
