Cochrane’s feline friends just received a purr-fect gift from Whiskas, as the popular cat food brand fulfilled the Cochrane and Area Humane Society’s (CAHS) wish list for the cats in its care.

The Whiskas Wish Lists Initiative is aimed at providing much-needed resources to shelters across Canada, donating essentials such as food, toys, grooming items and litter to improve the lives of shelter cats.

“The Whiskas brand knows that not all cats have the same opportunities to experience happiness,” the company stated in a press release. “That’s why we’re launching the Wish Lists initiative to spread happiness to cats by fulfilling items shelters need most.”

As part of the initiative, Whiskas has partnered with CAHS and four other shelters:

  • SPCA St. John's (St. John's, N.L.)
  • Ontario SPCA and Humane Society (various locations, Ont.)
  • Maison Le Chat Botté (Montréal, Que.)
  • Okanagan Humane Society (Kelowna, B.C.)

“Having wish lists is standard for shelters,” said Robyn Roy, communications coordinator for CAHS. “We often rely heavily on donations and volunteers to keep us open and running, so something like this helps us greatly in making sure the cats in our care are as happy and healthy as possible while waiting for their forever homes.”

Roy noted the shelter is currently supporting more than 100 cats, both housed on site and in foster care, including several litters of newborn kittens.

“These donated items—like toys, food, litter, and grooming supplies—make a big difference in the quality of life for the animals,” she said.

Among the many beneficiaries is Flirt, the shelter’s longest-term feline resident, who has been at CAHS since 2023.

“At 15.5 years young, Flirt brings cozy companionship and a daily dose of affection to everyone she meets,” said Roy. “She especially enjoys the new toys from the wish list and loves getting snuggles from our volunteers.”

When asked what the donation means to her, Flirt expressed her heartfelt gratitude.
“Meow,” she exclaimed.
