The Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation (AIWC) will be celebrating its past at their “Call of the Wilds” 20th Anniversary Gala Celebration

Held at the Red & White Club in Calgary, the fundraising event will get started at 5:30 p.m., April 5th.

“We’re going to be recognizing our 20 years of saving wildlife,” said Deb Oldfield, coordinator of the event. “Everyone should come and celebrate our past and support our future.”

Hosted by Paul Dunphy of Global Calgary, the evening will feature a presentation from keynote speaker Brian Keating. A world-renowned naturalist, Keating will take gala-goers on a journey through the world’s best wilderness locations.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Calgary Stampede Showband and guitarist Joel Fraser. A special appearance will be made by Griffin, a red-tailed hawk.

There will be lots of opportunities for guests to donate, whether through buying 50/50 tickets or by bidding on a selection of auction items, including the chance to attend a raptor release.

Dianne Wittner, wildlife biologist and founder of AIWC, will take to the stage to share her views on wildlife and human’s existence with nature. Wittner has seen the centre evolve into an accredited vet hospital for wildlife — a far cry from when she was operating the institute from the basement of her home.

“We’ve changed a lot of people’s lives through the centre,” said Wittner. “But we need to touch more people — we count on the ripple effect. People are integral to conservation.”

Proceeds from the evening will go to the centre, to be put towards purchasing food, medical supplies, rescue equipment, and to cover the cost of operating the institute.

“If people care about wildlife, this is a great way to support the community and the work we’re doing,” said Wittner.

Oldfield said she’s hoping the night raises $20,000 for the institute.

Tickets are $100 a piece, or $750 to secure a table for eight. Tickets can be purchased by calling the centre at 403-946-2361 or visiting aiwc.ca.
