The head coach of the CFR Chemicals Midget AAA Bisons – and a familiar face on the Cochrane hockey scene – says he hopes to draw some promising young players from this town to his new team.
“I have a fairly good idea of the talent pool in Cochrane,” said Dan Gendur, who was with the Heritage Junior Hockey League’s Cochrane Generals for three seasons before making the move earlier this month into the Alberta Midget Hockey League.
“There are a lot of good players that have the ability to play at that midget AAA level.”
Recent changes to Hockey Alberta’s AAA midget hockey draw zones shifted the Bisons out of Strathmore – their original base of operations – and into Airdrie, where they will make their home this winter. The recalibration allows the Bisons to now draw from the talent pool in Cochrane.
Gendur said he’s excited to share his team’s philosophy and plans for the upcoming season with Cochrane families at a Bisons information session on June 26 at 7 p.m. at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
“We’re going to talk about what our goals are … and how we’re going to build our organization into a top midget program in Alberta,” he said. “It’s especially going to give kids in Cochrane an opportunity to play at the highest level of midget possible.”
The Bisons will host their rookie and main camps in September, with the roster set by the middle of that month.
