High school football season is officially back in full swing.

The Rockyview jamboree at Spray Lake Legacy Field Aug. 31, is a way for teams to work back into a routine of live game play, as well as get a look at the competition for the upcoming season.

The Cochrane Cobras and Bow Valley Bobcats were among the eight teams fielding squads during the scrimmages, and coaches from both teams were fairly happy with how the event went for their respective squads.

“We started out a little slow, but I’m very impressed with our kids. Especially the young kids, because they don’t know the systems as well, but very, very impressed with them.” Cobras coach Rob McNab said. “We have some stuff to work on and we’ll get back in the film room and we got to go forward a little better, and get better on a few different things but we’re never happy. Not until the provincial championship, so we’ll keep at it.”

Bobcats coach Cam Cote said the coaching staff received what they expected from their team.

“We started out poorly and every series we went out and got better and better, and by the last series I thought we started to look pre-season form. Not season form, but we got where we needed to get.” Cote said. “It’s always good to come hit somebody else, you’ve got to tackle somebody other than yourself because it’s just a different thing. It’s a different look and it’s a great opportunity to do it, as well as a good way to bring the new Grade 10s into football. So yeah, it really is a great event.”

Rockyview football has always been tough competition and this year should be no different. Teams are bringing more players, as well as more coaches, meaning football is alive and well within the Rockyview Sports Association.

“Everybody brought a lot of players, which means football is gaining more traction in the school division,” said Cote. “Each team had a nice number of coaches so, as a fan of football, you have to love it. What a great night.”

The season kicks off for both Cochrane schools on Sept. 8. Bow Valley is in Airdrie to take on the Bert Church Chargers, while Cochrane High travels to Springbank to play the Phoenix.
