Amateur fighters from Rival Boxing Cochrane have continued to stun the boxing world, picking up a pile of medals over the weekend of Feb. 27-28 at the Golden Gloves in Spruce Grove.

After knocking out the competition at the Alberta Winter Games last month, the gym took eight boxers to the biggest tournament of the season.

Each one of them walked away with a medal around their neck.

“It was a good tournament,” said coach Craig Wilson.

“There were around 180 boxers there, and ours competed in the Junior A, Junior B, and Senior categories.”

Jude Wilkinson grabbed a gold in the 75kg category, while Lewis Chiddle (47 kg), Luke Foster (66 kg), Kristen Sabourin (senior 65 kg), and Anne Garrido (senior 56 kg) also picked up golds.

Kyle Helfrich (32 kg) and Max Roussel (69 kg) both brought home silver medals.

Hailey Birdsall (64 kg) grabbed a bronze.

“We were just looking to get a big win after the Winter Games and do the best we could,” said 13-year old Wilkinson.

Apart from a few club cards, the tournament season is now done and the fighters can take break from their five-day a week, two hours per day training regime, and recharge their batteries.

“There are a few cards coming up in April and May, but the next season kicks off in September,” Wilson confirmed. “We’ve got some time off, so the kids can rest their bodies and go through it all over again next season.”
