Cody Coverchuck of Meadow Lake, Sask., bucked his way to first place at this year’s Cochrane Classic Bull Riding.
“It feels good,” Coverchuck stated. “I went there expecting to win … every bull rider expects to win.”
Coverchuck won the first round with 81 points on Outlaw Buckers 306 Not Bluffing and even though he didn’t get first in the second round his strong performance in the first round was enough to carry him.
Chase Thielan of Milk River, Alta., placed second with a score of 79.5 on Outlaw Buckers 304 Hustlin.
Coverchuck scored 300 BRC (Bull Riders Canada) points to put him at 2,215 points good enough for second place. Brazil’s Marcos Gloria, who has 2,440 BRC, sits in first. Gloria placed fourth over the weekend.
“You know it feels good,” Coverchuck said. “It would feel better if I was No. 1 … it’s every bull riders goal to get No. 1.”
At 23 years old, this is Coverchucks sixth professional year, which is now his full-time job.
His inspiration for bull riding came from his brother – it was a dare that got him bitten by the adrenaline bug.
“My brother, he was a saddle bronc rider,” Coverchuck said. “He dared me to get on a cow.”
From that moment he fell in love with riding.
Some days it feels really good and other days you have your head in the dirt and you wonder why you’re doing it.”
It’s a tradition for Coverchuck to call his mom right after a ride as an appreciation for all the love and support he receives from his parents.
Coverchuck has won $20,532 so far this year.
