With a 3-1 victory over the Calgary Titans on Feb. 2, the Cochrane Chaos have now won six games in a row and 14 of their last 15 Alberta Junior Female Hockey League (AJFHL) games, dating back to Nov. 4. The only set back? A 6-3 loss at the hands of the Edmonton Wolves on Jan. 14.
It has been an amazing run these past few months for the Chaos, who hold a league leading 21-4 record, one game up on the second place Central Alberta Amazons in the South Division standings. The game against Calgary was another pillar in Cochrane’s remarkable season.
During the game, the Chaos saw a solid performance in net from Megan Parkyn, who registered her 11th win on the season. Parkyn has been outstanding in goal for Cochrane, posting an 11-2-1 record with five shut outs and a spectacular goals-against-average of 1.03.
Kaylin Herman, Brette Matheson and leading point getter Breanna Martin, also tallied goals for the team. Martin, who has four game winners to her name and has recorded 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points in 25 games, provides the Chaos will some clutch play.
Martin said she’s just been playing hard and bounces have gone her way.
“There’s definitely been a big change from last year. But the league is so much fun to play in, while it’s also still very challenging,” Martin said.
“I love playing in this league and everyone on the team. Whoever I’m placed on a line with, I know we will still do the things we need to do because everyone works so hard. Our record has shown that’s true.”
When asked if she is a clutch player, Martin deferred all the credit to her teammates.
“I have to give the credit to my teammates, it never takes one person to do all the work,” Martin said.
“It takes a whole team to win and takes a team to score a goal … without them, I wouldn’t have any of my points. I would say all of my teammates are pretty clutch.”
Martin added the Chaos have been happy with their play that’s resulted in a first place record, but she feels like the team still has more to give once playoffs start.
“We definitely need to go in confident but we expect our game to be at a whole other level … it will be the most challenging part of our season, but it’s also the time of year that everybody looks forward to,” Martin said.
“Our coaches have done a lot in practice to keep us prepared and as long as they keep pushing us how they have, I think it gives our team that drive to succeed. In the end, the team that wants it more will be the one that comes out on top. Our main focus for the next month is on hockey and playing for each other.”
The Chaos have two important games remaining in their schedule when they hit the road to play the Calgary Titans on Feb. 10 and the Lethbridge Eagles on Feb. 11.
