The Cochrane Chaos women’s hockey team started their season off with a pair of wins over the Calgary Warriors and the Calgary Titans, outscoring their opponents 14-4.
In their game against the Warriors on Sept. 29, Cochrane shutout the Calgary team 7-0 and followed that up with a 7-4 victory over the Titans on Oct. 1. Chaos head coach Derek Loomer was pleased with how his team started their campaign.
“We got off to a really good start this weekend. I was really pleased with the balance of our lines with everyone being able to contribute at both ends of the ice and I was also pleased with how quickly our players have come together,” Loomer said.
“I really want to nurture that connection and the support they get from each other all season. If you look at our stats, we had points from almost everyone and the girls that were not on the score sheet are capable of scoring. Our balanced attack will certainly help us this season.
When asked who stood out to him throughout the first two games, Loomer was quick to point out local product Brette Matheson, who registered three points in her team’s 7-0 win over the Warriors.
“Brette was a late walk-on who we have asked to play defence for us even though she has never played that position before and she has proven to be a very skilled and quick learner,” Loomer said.
“She is a great fit for the culture we’ve built up.”
The Chaos will hit the ice again on Oct. 7 in a rematch with the Warriors, where the Chaos bench boss expects a much different team than the one his team saw in game one. The team will then return to home ice the following night to take on the Irma Chargers.
“We played the Warriors in our first game and they were really just getting together. I expect they will be better with another week of practise, but we should still be the better team,” Loomer said.
“We have not seen Irma but they only lost 2-1 to Sherwood Park this past weekend who were the league champions last season, so I expect a challenge from them. They are usually a big physical team so we will have to be ready to compete.”
The Chaos’ game against Irma will be at 2 p.m. at the Cochrane Arena.
