The Cochrane Chaos women’s junior hockey team is on a hot streak. The team has won four of their last five games, and currently sits second in the league with an 8-3 record behind the 11-1 Central Alberta Amazons.
The Amazons’ one loss came to the Chaos on Nov. 17 at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre, with Cochrane taking the contest 2-1. The game was very evenly matched with teams trading first and second period goals before the Chaos potted a goal late in the third period to take the victory. Summer Gibbons had an excellent night for Cochrane scoring a goal and adding an assist while Breanna Martin also scored for the home side.
Goaltender Megan Parkyn was solid in goal, turning away 22 of the 23 shots she faced in the game.
This was the second of four meetings between the two squads, with Central Alberta taking the first game 1-0 on Nov. 4. Chaos head coach Derek Loomer said the win over the top team in the league was a huge confidence booster for his team.
“I believe the team really saw how they can pull together against the best in our league and win. It will definitely increase our confidence and belief in each other,” Loomer said.
“We have now beaten every team we’ve played at least once, with the exception of Fort Saskatchewan who we play next, so we know we are capable of winning every night if we play to our potential.”
The Chaos will play the Fort Saskatchewan Fury, who beat the Chaos 5-4 in the only meeting so far between the two teams. The Fury are one game below .500 but Loomer says they still present plenty of challenges for his team.
“Fort Saskatchewan is the one team that has beat us and we want to return the favour. Only playing one game per week our players can focus on the one opponent,” Loomer said.
“They are a solid team with a good history so I expect them to come out strong. We will need a good start and be prepared to play a full 60 minutes.”
The game against the Fury will go on Nov. 25 at the Cochrane Arena at 1 p.m. This is the final game in the month of November for the Chaos. Their next three games will all be on the road starting Dec. 2 against the Edmonton Wolves.
