The Cochrane Chaos women’s junior hockey team continued their great start to the season after a 4-0 win over the Sherwood Park Steele on Oct. 21.
The win boosts the Chaos’ record to 5-2 on the season, which is good for second in the south division behind the Central Alberta Amazons. The win also broke a two game losing streak for Cochrane, when they lost 5-4 to the Fort Saskatchewan Fury on Oct. 14 and 4-2 the following day to Sherwood Park.
The Chaos scored one goal in the opening period, before busting out with three in the second. Audrey Buston and Summer Gibbons both finished with a goal and an assist, while Ashley Richard chipped in with two assists. Kaylin Herman and Melanie Scholz each added goals of their own. Goaltender Megan Parkyn made 30 saves for the shut out.
This season the Cochrane based team has outscored their opponents 38-16, and their 38 goals are a league high.
Chaos head coach Derek Loomer says his team was motivated to beat the Steele, less than a week after they handed Cochrane only their second loss of the season.
“I believe the biggest difference between games was our energy level. Sherwood Park is a good team and we just did not have any energy away from the puck when we were up there on the 15th,” Loomer said.
“On Saturday (Oct. 21) the girls were focused and energized both with the puck and away from it.”
The Chaos next two games will be against the winless Lethbridge Eagles, but Loomer says his team won’t overlook any opponents, regardless of their record.
“We have always struggled with Lethbridge, so we want to have a strong game. Our players really enjoy playing in all situations and we really need to focus on playing our game and pushing the pace in all levels of competition,” Loomer said.
“There are too many variables that can impact each game to get caught up in each team’s record as indicators of how the game will go. We will emphasize good habits and high energy for all shifts and hopefully get our wins.”
Cochrane will play the Eagles on Oct. 29 in Lethbridge, and then again on Nov. 3 at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre Totem One.
