Coaches of all stripes come together to talk concussions

Knowledge is power – especially when it comes to the treatment of concussions, says a group of Cochrane sports physiotherapists.

Knowledge is power – especially when it comes to the treatment of concussions, says a group of Cochrane sports physiotherapists.

For the first time, Cochrane Sport Physiotherapy – located within Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre – is offering concussion baseline tests, which involve completing a comprehensive set of assessments on an athlete when they are healthy, so when and if they ever do suffer a concussion, the information can help ease the road to recovery.

“It can really give us some good feedback,” said physiotherapist Krista Taylor. “You can get a really individualized treatment plan on which areas are really suffering, whether it’s more muscular-skeletal, or more visual, or memory … you can pick up on where to focus the treatment and prioritize where the issues are.”

To open the discussion about concussion management, the clinic will host a seminar at Rival Boxing Gym Cochrane on March 14 at 7:30 p.m.. Boxing coach Anne Garrido said she hopes coaches from across the landscape of sport, as well as parents of active youth, will take part in the free information session.

“This is a concern for every sport. You never know when something could happen … The more we can share, the better it is for everyone,” said Garrido. “I think parents are at peace when they know we (as coaches) manage all their athletes’ needs.

“These are kids … they need to support of the adults and coaches around them. It’s not just about winning – it’s about growing up.”
