It was a sensational weekend for Cochrane High School as their junior girls basketball team captured gold at the Rocky View Sports Association divisional finals at Bow Valley High School on March 5.
Cobras defeated Chestermere Lady Lakers 39-33 in the closest game the undefeated Cochrane side has faced all season.
“We’ve done very well so far,” said Cobras head coach Doug Jensen.
“The girls have been exceptional at handling the pressure. We haven’t had a lot of tight games like this one, Chestermere played fantastic. They forced us to take some bad shots, but we came through. Our second quarter, was better than our first, and our third was better than our second. For grade 9 and 10 girls to react how they did in a situation like this is amazing.”
Cobras are next set to take part in the SC Zone Championships on March 11-12 at Foothills Composite High School in Okotoks, and Jensen feels that his team has as good of a chance as anyone at walking away with gold.
“Winning Zones has always been our goal,” he said. “We’re ranked second right now, behind Foothills. We played them the other week at a tournament, and lost, but we’ve studied them, and we know what has to be done in order to beat them.
“The two things we’re focused on now are minimizing our turnovers and offensive rebounds. Those both hurt us the last time we faced Foothills. We’ll give it a shot, but it’s going to be tough. They’ve been together a long time and have a bunch of grade 10s and 11s in their squad. They’re bigger and faster than us, but we’re up to the challenge, and that’s the way we like it.”
