The Cochrane Cobras are continuing their dominant ways, after a 66-7 victory over the Chestermere Cowboys.
The Cobras scored touchdown’s on their opening two possessions and never looked back in the game, and were up 66-0 before Chestermere scored their lone touchdown with just under three minutes remaining in the contest.
The Cowboys touchdown was the first the Cobras have allowed in regular season play since their opening game against Springbank in which the Cobras won 35-10. The Cobras shutout W.H. Croxford 48-0 and Bow Valley 35-0 in a game that was cut short in the second quarter. Cochrane have outscored their opponents 184-17, while going 4-0 in the process. Co-head coach Rob McNab says his defence has been playing lights out in the last few games.
“It’s 12 guys to the ball. The big thing is, wherever the ball is going, we’re going,” McNab said.
“We’re going to get there fast. He (Cobras co-head coach Bruce O’Neil) has been preaching that and doing a really good job. We study a lot of film, so basically you want to be in the film at the end of the play, so if you’re not, you’re not getting to the ball.”
McNab was also quite happy with the performance of his quarterback Xavier Vaillancourt, who was started the last two games in place of starter Brett Conlon, who missed the games due to injury with a jammed finger.
“Against Bow Valley, it was short lived because of the cancellation of that game … I thought he had a really good first half and then obviously he started against Chestermere, he was very composed, very mature. I mean it’s very tough for a Grade 10 to step in, especially with the skill set we have at the receiver spot.” McNab said.
You know we’re going to throw the ball, that’s no surprise, and I thought he did a really good job. We watched film as a team, and you know he takes a really hard look at himself … I think he’s going to be a good one. With that being said, Brett (Conlon) will start on Thursday, but we’ll bring (Xavier) along as the games dictate.”
The Cobras will play the 3-1 George McDougall Mustangs on Oct. 5, and McNab says the Airdrie school has always created challenges for his team in the past, and expects nothing less from them in their upcoming game.
“As usual, they’re a big, strong, physical team and so we have to match up physically with them,” McNab said.
“We’ve had some success against them in the last few years, but that doesn’t guarantee anything this year. We definitely have to play physical and play fast, that’s our game.”
The matchup with George McDougall will take place at Spray Lakes Sawmills Legacy Field, with kickoff going at 5.
