The Cochrane High School Cobras football team hosted its year-end banquet on Dec. 17. There was much to celebrate after a stellar year where Cobras went undefeated on their way to the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) Tier 3 Provincial Football Championship.
“It’s great to have a little team wind-up with all the parents,” said Cobras co-head coach and offensive coordinator Rob McNab. “The Lionesses put on a big banquet for us, and we give out all our most valuable player of the year awards, as well as rookie of the year, and others.”
This year’s most valuable players awards went to Ethan Forrest, Justin Fehr, Tae Gordon, Cole Avery, Erik Nusl, Justin Sambu, Michael Scott and Spencer Marchand. Most improved player winners were Kael Kelly and Dawson Price, while special teams winner went to Nusl.
Rookies of the year were Jackson McLean and Cody Pickering, and the Cobra Crunch award winner was Sambu.
Jedediah Heal and Bowen Beirerback were voted best offensive linesmen, while Dylan Gingrich-Hadley was named best defensive lineman.
Best receiver went to Zach Rabe, while Austin Yersel was named best linebacker, and Brett Conlon and Daniel deBruin were Scout Award recipients.
The Coaches Award was given to Kane Boklaschuk and Bryce Crawford, while Gordon was named best running back.
Best defensive back was Damon Scott, and Marchand, Forrest, Yersel, and Nusl were all leadership award recipients, with the Hancock Award going to Paul and Ann McLean.
The Utility Award went to Forrest and Avery, while the Matt Mundy and Tony Hazistamatis awards went to Fehr, and Matt Clooten respectively.
