The Cochrane High Cobras football team beat the George McDougall Mustangs with a lopsided 56-8 victory on Oct. 5.

The Cobras have now improved to 5-0 on the season with one game remaining, and have outscored their opponents 240-25 in the process, including a pair of shut out wins over W.H. Croxford and Bow Valley, while only allowing a touchdown late in the game to Chestermere. The only game Cochrane High has allowed more than seven points was in their season opening game against the Springbank Phoenix, who the Cobras beat 35-10.

The Cobras co-head coach was happy with his team’s strong performance over a team who were close behind them in the standings.

“They came out and stung us on a quick pass, and they’re big and physical… which is what we needed to see (as a team) where some guys to come at us full speed,” Rob McNab said.

“As their coach put it, they were looking to give us a good game, but he said that we were just a little more polished than they were. I take that as a compliment that we can play that polished, even though we made some mistakes. which will be fixed before our next game. But our Grade 10s came in the second half and made some plays which was really nice to see.”

Along with the win, quarterback Brett Conlon returned to the line up and had a strong outing in his first game back since jamming a finger in the Cobras win over W.H. Croxford on Sept. 23. Conlon was excited to make his return to the field.

“It feels great to be on the field again contributing to a win. It was definitely hard for me to sit back and watch the games unfold,” Conlon said.

“He was a little off at the beginning, ideal in perfection I want 10 out of 10 completions, and he had a couple balls that were a little high, but coming off that hand injury (to his throwing hand) I was really impressed with how he played,” McNab said.

“He’s a key to our team so we need to keep him healthy.”

Conlon was happy with how the team has played over the past few games, as the Cobras have ran roughshod over the rest of the league, believing the sky is the limit for his team.

“Moving into the playoffs we’re going to need some veterans to really step up and make sure we’re showing the young kids what to expect,” Conlon said.

The Cobras will look to close out the Rockyview regular season without a blemish on their record when they travel to Airdrie to take on the Bert Church Chargers. The Chargers are 0-4 on the season and have been outscored 159-3. With that said, McNab says his team won’t take any game or team for granted.

“We’re going to treat them like every other team, we’re going to play hard and, most importantly, we’re going to prepare,” McNab said.

“We try to teach these kids to prepare, and we’ll see what happens on Saturday obviously, but the group will be prepared.”

The match up between the Cobras and Chargers will go Oct. 14 at Ed Eggerer Athletic Park with kickoff going at 11.

The Rockyview playoffs will start Oct. 20 and 21, with the bronze and gold medal game going Oct. 27 and 28.
