The Cochrane Comets swim team has had a massive influx in people joining their program, partly due to the fact of the new pool at Spray Lakes Sawmills Family Sports Centre.

Comets head coach Danielle Genung, said when she first started coaching the club, there were just over 30 members.

“When I first came on board, we had 37 registered members. The following year we were able to bump that number up to 48 but with the old pool, that was all we could handle,” Genung said.

“We are currently at 103 swimmers this year, so we’ve doubled the club within the year and a lot of that comes with the facility to be able to accommodate that many members. We aren’t capping our club at, and we have a wait list and we had to close registration due to the influx in people joining.”

The Comets can also now host swim meets for the first time, as well as other events happening throughout the year, but the new facility also helps deliver the clubs program.

“We’re looking forward to what this year is going to bring… Planning for this has been happening since 2015,” Genung said.

“We’re able to offer a more diverse program for the team.”

The club itself, is looking forward to competing and achieving their goals that they’ve set for themselves.

“We’re looking to increase the amount of kids we send to the provincial level competition, but we’re focused on the process required,” Genung said.

“The outcome is a result of the process. Are you coming to the pool prepared, are you well rested, how are you mentally approaching this sport. How do we as coaches get them prepared for when it is time to compete, their skill and hard work is what puts them in the position they’re in.”

“It’s not always about the times they post.”

The Comets next competition is Oct. 7 and 8 when they’re at the Canmore Pentathlon.
