The Cochrane Cup is back and stronger than ever. The annual tournament that has been running for close to 25 years now will take place Sept. 16 and 17 and will feature 22 teams and more than 400 players.

Soccer teams from all over Alberta including Banff, Canmore, Leduc, Olds, Edmonton, Airdrie, Red Deer and Calgary will play in both men’s and women’s open divisions, meaning players 18 and over are qualified to play.

The 12 teams in the men’s open division are the most the tournament has ever seen. Also included is the men’s over 35 division, which as been a mainstay in the tournament for the past several years. Forty-five games will be played over the two-day event, and having the 22 teams is important for the tournament to succeed according to tournament organizers Oscar Pacheco and Paul Tas.

“Having 22 teams in the tournament means we can put together a nice tournament, but maintain a relaxed atmosphere.” Tas said. “We want a very competitive tournament but we want people to have fun, and have a good time. Obviously, we all want to win, but we want people to remember to enjoy themselves, that’s what this tournament is really about.”

The games will be played at four different pitches over the course of the weekend. Mitford Park, Rangers Field and Spray Lake Legacy Field will all host games including the A, B and C finals.

Pacheco said the tournament could not happen without the many sponsors, old and new.

“The sponsors we have make it so soccer remains more affordable, as we want to make sure everyone can play.” Pacheco said. “Instead of raising fees, we try to give back to the sponsors by hosting events after the games on Saturday and Sunday and get them more publicity. The Venue will be hosting us Saturday night and there will be a live band for everyone participating in the tournament to enjoy.”

The winners from each group will receive $500, runner up will take home $250 and third place will take home $100.
