Ten athletes from the St. Timothy High School track team are headed to the Calgary City Track Championships on Saturday after a solid showing at the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association divisional meet last week.

Senior Sophia Nowicki dominated the distance category, taking first in the 3,000-metre and second in the 1500-metre races, while Grade 12 teammate Maddy Cruickshank rushed over the line in third place in the 400-metre race. The track team’s familiar faces will both graduate from high school next month.

Juniors Mikenna Spademan and Maggie Brolsma also qualified for cities, along with junior boys Josh Novak, Scott Delsing, Eric Swedlo and Garett Van Roon.

The 4x400-metre relay team also shattered a St. Tim’s school record with a second place time of 4:03:60.

Qualifying athletes from the catholic high school will join their counterparts from Cochrane’s two public schools on June 2 and 3 at Foote Field in Edmonton for the Alberta Schools Athletic Association provincial competition.

Cochrane High School will send 27 athletes after stacking up golds, silvers and bronzes in 29 different events at Tuesday’s ASAA south central zones.

“We had a great day,” said Cobras track coach Esther Sieben. “We all came back with a suntan and some kids came back with a lot of hardware. They are just super strong and they are just all-around athletes.”
