Cochrane’s Skylar Sieben, 17, had a triumphant weekend winning gold at the National Legion Canadian Track and Field Championships in Brandon, Man., and silver with Team Alberta.

“It feels really good,” Sieben said proudly of her winning weekend. “I’ve worked really hard for this.”

At last year’s championships, she placed seventh and set three goals for this year: to break the 5,000-point mark, bring home a medal and to break the provincial record.

It never occurred to her that she would not only accomplish all three but also be selected last minute to compete for Team Alberta for the 4x400m relay and win silver.

Sieben broke the Alberta provincial record by scoring 5,020 points.

“I’m pretty happy,” Sieben stated. “I honestly wasn’t planning on being on Team Alberta.”

Sieben also accomplished a more personal goal that she never expected.

“Javelin was always one of my worst events,” Sieben said. “And finally it scored me my higher points. “

Sieben was sitting at silver all weekend until her javelin performance speared her 739 points. It was that event that thrust her over the top and essentially won her gold.

“I was super exciting … I had throws that just felt good,” Sieben echoed. “I ran to my mom and other coach.”

Sieben’s dominating weekend will be one for the history books.
