Cochranites rack up medals at Canadian Special Olympics

Two local athletes returned home with a bagful of medals from the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games hosted by Cornerbrook N.L., Mar. 1-4. Cross-country skier Elouise Stewart romped her way to three gold medals.

Two local athletes returned home with a bagful of medals from the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games hosted by Cornerbrook N.L., Mar. 1-4.

Cross-country skier Elouise Stewart romped her way to three gold medals.

She came out on top in the 10-kilometre classic, with a time of 52 minutes, 27.1 seconds. In the 5k freestyle event, she recorded a time of 22 minutes, 31 seconds, and in the 7.5k classic she came out with a time of 39 minutes, 43.2 seconds.

First-time competitor Brock Jesse returned home with two silver medals in the 1k and 500-metre classic cross-country ski events, and a bronze in the 2.5k classic.

Canmore athlete Shane Stewart, who also trains with the Cochrane athletes, won two gold medals in the 5k and 10k men’s classic events, and a silver medal in 2.5k classic.

Team Alberta had 64 athletes competing in seven sports including alpine, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, floor hockey, snowshoeing and speed skating.

The team returns home with 20 gold medals, 24 silver, and 17 bronze.
