Bow Valley Credit Union’s First Goal Program is wrapping up as this year’s hockey season is winding down.
The minor hockey program, which is in its first year, allows youngsters the opportunity to revel in the magic of scoring their first goal.
“It’s a two-part program,” said Scott Grattidge, manager of retail operations at the credit union. “The first being any kid that scored their first goal could go to our community website and send it the details. We’d then make a personalized puck commemorating the achievement with their name and date of the goal on it.
“For the second part, we invited any of the kids to write a story about how they scored their goal. We’d then put their names into a draw for a pair of Calgary Flames tickets.”
This year’s inaugural winner was seven-year-old Noah White of the Cochrane Stealth novice team, who scored on Oct. 24, 2015 at a tournament in Golden, B.C.
Despite being in its infancy, Grattidge is hopeful the program can continue to grow in the years to come.
“We rolled in out in Cochrane and did around 30 to 50 pucks this season, so it wasn’t too bad,” he said. “It was mostly about getting some awareness going. We plan on building onto the program next season. We had some traction in Banff, Canmore, and Calgary this year, and we’re thinking of introducing it to Airdrie, since we didn’t do that this season.”
As of yet, there are no set plans as to how the program will expand, but Grattridge revealed BVCU is planning to “ramp it up with more media coverage come fall.”
