The Cochrane Comets Swim Club hosted its first swim meet on Dec. 16 and 17 at the Jayman BUILT Aqautic Centre at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
The new pool is a major step up from the old Big Hill Pool for competitive swimmers here in Cochrane and the meet was a way to showcase all the hard work that went into getting the sport to this point in the community.
Comets head coach Danielle Genung said the first meet couldn’t have gone any better.
“Overall the meet was beyond successful. It was busy and packed, we had an excellent half time show with Blake Richards and Santa Claus and 95 per cent of our swimmers posted best times across all clubs,” Genung said.
“There were club records set, town (best) times, provincial times and it was a very well organized meet. It was a huge, huge success for us.”
“Everyone was impressed with how well it was run, started early, finished early. The crowd loved Santa Claus, the Calgary Stampeders donated a bunch of footballs that we tossed to the kids in attendance, Mayor Jeff (Genung) spoke, Blake Richards had a few words, and it was a really great way to head into the New Year.”
Genung also said the meet was a good way to join the club together as a whole.
“It definitely brings the club together and moves us all quite a bit closer. The parent membership had to really step up and work quite hard over the last two years for officials and 18 months for everybody else to get organized,” Genung said.
“The kids had a good time in their home pool, but they don’t really associate that we’re hosting our own swim meet, they’re just participating in a meet in their home pool. Home pool advantage gives us a boost, and it was a long distance meet so we’ve been working for weeks in order for them to perform and execute this well. We had a lot of kids have a successful weekend.”
“This December meet will be one that we’re doing annually, so it’s in the future schedule and in the books, so the team is pretty proud of their accomplishments and are ready for more.
Genung also adds that there is another upcoming home meet scheduled for the springtime, the Comets Speed Meet which will be in May.
