The Cochrane Curling Club’s annual Men’s bonspiel was a major success over the weekend of Jan. 29-31 as team from all over Cochrane and area flocked to the club’s rink for a chance at bragging rights.

“We had 24 teams this year,” said organizer Ken Weisner. “More than just half of the teams were out of town from places like Calgary, Canmore, and Springbank.

“Twenty-four teams is the biggest amount that the club can accommodate with our four sheets of ice. Last year we had 22 teams participate, but this is usually what we strive for.”

This year’s “A” finals winner was Team Lylyk from the Calgary Curling Club.

“B” finals winner was Team Horne from the Cochrane Curling Club.

“C” event winner was Team Weatherhog from Canmore, and “D” finals winner was Team Bechtold, from the Cochrane Curling Club.

What does the club have planned for next year’s edition of the bonspiel?

“It depends on what happens at the new facility at Spray Lake,” Weisner said of the new curling facility being built at Cochrane’s Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. “Once we go to six sheets of ice, we can definitely take more teams and have a bigger event.

“I’m not quite sure how we’ll run it at Spray Lake yet, but we’re thinking g bigger and better, so we’ll have to see what the possibilities are.”
