Four different goal scorers found the back of the net for a third straight Cavalry FC victory.
Cavalry FC (3-1-2) added three second half goals to secure its first home win of the season and third consecutive triumph as a hole in a dominant 4-0 result over Pacific FC on May 17 at Spruce Meadows’ ATCO Field.
“It’s a process and sometimes we’re a bit slow out of the gates, but good things are starting to happen,” said Cavalry FC head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr.
“It’s all about just finding a rhythm and it’s nice to do that at home, in front of our fans with a lot of goals to celebrate and also a shutout.”
Mihail Gherasimencov brought the supporters out of their seats just seven minutes into the contest with a brilliant outside of the foot half volley on the second phase of a corner for the left winger’s first goal with the Cavs.
“That’s my type of range, I like shooting half volleys out of the box,” said Gherasimencov. “You probably saw against Forge one of my first shots hit the post and almost went in and this time I got lucky and it went in.”
Gherasimencov, who joined the team on loan from Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2, has been enjoying a sublime run of form as a natural left wing back with the versatility to play and thrive further up the pitch.
“He’s a terrific ball striker,” said Wheeldon Jr. “We saw that when he almost shot it in against Forge in the last few minutes. This is not a surprise because he does it in training and he’s got a terrific left foot and he’s also got that grit.”
In the second half, Tobias Warschewski doubled the lead on a well-struck penalty kick to the low left corner after Pacific FC was penalized for a handball in the box in the 61st minute.
Ali Musse then marked his 100th appearance with the Cavalry in style, converting the second penalty in just eight minutes after being brought down in the box.
The winger made no mistake from the spot, using a stutter step to put the keeper off balance and find the back of the net.
“He’s such a threat,” Wheeldon Jr. added. “He’s showing intelligence, good decision making and also two-way play…I was delighted for him.”
Cavalry FC celebrated its fourth goal on the final play of the match once again via the set piece.
Substitute Nicolas Wähling stepped up and delivered on a free kick just outside of the box with a curling strike into the near corner of the goal.
The four-goal victory is the largest margin for the Cavs against Pacific since the 2019 season.
“You can’t come here and start how we started, we lacked intensity right from the start,” said Pacific FC head coach James Merriman. “If you do that against Cavalry, it’s not going to go your way.”
Cavalry FC takes to the pitch once again on May 21 on the road in the Canadian Championship for the first of two fixtures versus Vancouver FC. The return leg is in July back at ATCO Field.
In CPL action, the Cavs charge back to Spruce Meadows on May 25 for a 3 p.m. clash with Winnipeg’s Valour FC.
