Now that the sizzle of the season is over, the Cochrane Generals were able to celebrate each other’s accomplishments at the hockey club’s annual awards dinner last Saturday.

The Texas Gate hosted players, coaches, parents, fans and significant others for a night of fun. Coach Dan Gendur said, despite a playoff run that didn’t turn out exactly how the team had hoped, the awards banquet was an evening to focus on the year’s many highlights.

“Anytime you can have a 33-4-1 record in the regular season, that’s always a positive,” he said, adding the Gens also “excelled in provincials” with a franchise first silver medal finish.

A few players were recognized for their efforts throughout the fall and winter, including Slater Ransom and Connor Rendell with Most Valuable Player honours and Talus Hume with the Coaches Award.

“Talus has been with the organization for a very long time. He never complained once about anything,” said Gendur.

Brett Hamer took home two awards for best defender and playoff MVP, while Walid Hassin got the nod for the most improved player.

“His passion for hockey is second to none,” said Gendur of Hassin. “His willingness to learn … He’s willing to do all the little things.”

Gens players and staff will now go their separate ways until next season’s scouting, tryouts and practice begin later this year.
