The Bow Valley Grizzlies rugby squad capped off a historic season at an annual awards banquet to honour the best and brightest of the team.

“We had over 50 people there and classed it up,” said Coach Ty Hawes. “I think everybody had a great time.”

Last month, the Grizz got gussied up and gathered at the Texas Gate Bar and Grill to raise a glass to a thrilling season that saw them clinch the Southern Alberta Division 2 City Championship for the first time since the team’s inception five years ago.

Hawes said he also handed out awards to several players, all of which were voted on by teammates.

Top Forward honours went to Connor Gilbert and Mack Tivendale, while Joey Clarke was named Top Back. Most Improved Player was Brennan Bourchier, and the Most Valuable Player Award went to Hamish Wrafter.

“I think he really just helped our back line a lot this year,” said Hawes of the MVP. “He never missed any training sessions either – that kind of commitment goes a long way. The boys appreciated having him, that’s for sure.”

Bow Valley High School student Rylen Waugh – the youngest player on the team at only 17 years old – was named Rookie of the Year.

“For his age, he’s a pretty special player. He’s put a lot of time and effort in to the game,” said Hawes. “He brings a real competitive spirit and a lot of skill. I’m really looking forward to see where his rugby takes him.”

Finally, The Grizz Award went to Anthony Battistone.

“It’s something that kind of embodies what it means to be a Grizz on and off the pitch,” said Hawes of Battistone. “(Someone) that does all the extra things.”

While the Grizzlies still visit with each other for birthday parties and barbeques, they’ll get back to practice in January in anticipation of the 2017 rugby season. Hawes said he and the team are excited for the year ahead.

“We’ll start some stuff up in January,” he said. “The boys are pretty stoked for it.”
