The Grizzlies celebrated a victory against one of their biggest rivals as their regular season winds down.
“It was a real good game,” head coach Ty Hawes stated of the 34-17 over the Calgary Canucks. “The boys played well … I’m proud of how they played.”
With only one loss this season, the Grizzlies are flying high and fighting tooth and nail to stay at the top of their game.
Grizz player Cam Birch is taking that philosophy to the next level and not letting any injury stand in his way.
“I snapped a tendon in my finger in my hand,” the scrum half player stated about his early season injury that will result in two surgeries when all is said and done. “They put in a temporary rod … it’s kind of weird, it’s hard to pass left – my fingers don’t bend all the way.
It’s definitely hard having three weeks off especially with the position I play … It feels great being back on – I hate being on the sidelines … I get itchy.”
This is Birch’s fourth season with the Grizzlies and he is extremely proud.
“It’s great, it’s an up and coming club,” Birch said. “For how long we have been a club it’s good.
“I would also like to mention how proud I am to be a part of a club with such young talent coming up in the ranks … I’m a strong believer that Cochrane has some of the best rugby in its league.”
Hawes is extremely impressed with how positive Birch has been able to stay throughout his injury.
“He played really well,” Hawes stated about Birch’s recent return from a three-week recovery from surgery. “ It (his hand) wasn’t even 100 per cent … it was fantastic.
The Grizzlies will compete against the Calgary Saracens on Aug. 26 for their last regular game.
“We’ll see how we go against them,” Hawes said. “We have to play hard … it will be a good game to see where we’re at … they’re good competition.”
The top six teams will head into playoffs and the top two teams from that move into city finals, which are set to start in September.
