The Bow Valley Grizzlies are one step away from defending their senior men’s division two city championship, with a convincing 92-7 win over the Lethbridge Rugby Club.
The score didn’t totally tell the tale though, as the Grizzlies had to fight for every inch in the game, and will now play the Red Deer Titans in a battle of one versus two in the final match.
Bow Valley last played Red Deer on May 27, with the Grizzlies taking the game 55-29. Head coach Tyler Hawes says that was then, and teams can change drastically from week to week, let alone after month-long periods.
“I expect a very solid team that will look a lot different from the one we faced at the beginning of the season, they’ve only lost once since that point,” Hawes said.
“They are competitors and it showed on the weekend with their come-from-behind win in the other semi final. I’m expecting a very good side, our boys will have to put in a big effort this week to prepare for what will be our toughest match of the year.”
Even with such a lopsided score, Hawes is making sure his team is locked and loaded headed into the final.
“There are always things we can work on going forward, the boys have to be ready for any situation, but they have been putting the time in and have worked very hard during practice, which will hopefully translate to doing well on the weekend,” Hawes said.
The city championship game will take place Sept. 23 at Calgary Rugby Park at 2.
