Though students at Bow Valley and Cochrane high schools are out of class this week, there’s no break for basketballers, who are blasting it out on the court in preparation for playoffs.
The Rocky View Sports Association quarterfinals start next week, with the senior varsity teams set to begin their run for the championship on Tuesday and the junior teams starting Wednesday.
Bow Valley’s junior varsity girls currently sit in third place in the division, with a record of 4-2 for the season. This weekend, the team will hit the hoops in Calgary for a tough tournament at Robert Thirsk High School.
“We want to see the type of competition we’ll see in the semi-finals (so) we know how to react when we put on the pressure,” said coach Chris Neilson, adding his squad is made up of a few new players who are still working on skill, but have all the heart they need to make a successful team.
“They’ve come together,” he said. “They really like basketball, and they’re really dedicated to moving forward with it.”
Cochrane’s third-place ranked senior varsity girls team is also hitting the road to Calgary for a tournament at Notre Dame High School this weekend to work out their own kinks before the post-season.
“That will give us three games before the playoff games, which is a good thing,” said head coach Randy Peron, adding his group is riding the high of a three-game winning streak.
“It definitely is a nice momentum. Everything … is all making sense now and they’re playing with a lot of confidence. They’re feeling good.”
