Hockey mania swept Spray Lake Family Sawmills Sports Centre over the weekend of Jan. 29-31 as the Cochrane Rockies hosted their annual female tournament.
“We had 200 girls participate this year, and 12 teams,” said organizer Debbie Novello. “There were four teams in each division: peewee, bantam, and midget.”
Cochrane teams had a strong showing as the peewees managed to win in overtime against the Calgary Rebels to take third in their division.
The bantam Rockies managed to edge the Okotoks Oilers 3-2 to take gold, and the midget Rockies fought valiantly but fell 5-3 in the final game against OK Tire Stettler to settle for silver.
For next year, Novello is planning on changing up the date of the tournament to attract more teams and get more ice time.
“We’re looking to run it the first weekend of January, before kids go back to school,” she said. “Then, we can easily double the size of the tournament if we get more ice.”
