The gloves are off for hockey-loving mom Jenna Dillon, and she’s hoping others will follow her lead.
Dillon is encouraging Cochranites to “drop your gloves” and participate in the first Annual CF Strong Cup – a new 3-on-3 youth tournament slated for Dec. 28 to 30 at Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre.
“We need skaters,” said Dillon, who is spearheading the event. She wants to register enough novice players (ages 7 and 8) to make four teams of 10 before the deadline of Nov. 1.
Kids can sign up as individuals or as a team for the tournament, which aims to raise funds in support of Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
The cause is dear to Dillon’s heart, since her daughter Georgia Beau was diagnosed with the life-shortening condition in February – just two weeks after she was born.
“I was in shock,” Dillon remembered through tears. “That phone call was just hard.”
The disease causes the body to produce thick mucus that clogs the passages in many of the body’s organs and in the lungs. According to Cystic Fibrosis Canada, approximately 4,000 people across the country currently live with the inherited disorder, for which there is no cure.
Dillon said her daughter is a “very happy baby” – despite what’s happening to her body.
“They consider it as an invisible disease. Even though she looks healthy, there’s a lot going on on the inside,” she explained. “She’s got lots of personality … and she loves her brother.”
Brother, Seamus, 7, was another inspiration for the tournament – both he and the whole family love the game. Seamus has even worked to help pay for the ice by setting up lemonade stands and bottle drives.
“I’ve been busy,” said Dillon. “He’s helped me a lot.”
Registration for the CF Strong Cup is $150, and teams are guaranteed four 45-minute games over the three days. Each child will receive a jersey to keep, and tons of prizes will be raffled off as well.
