What a way to end a junior career.
Cochranite Chandler Irvin was honoured with two awards at the Calgary Canucks end of season banquet on April 23.
Irvin – who was the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s (AJHL) team captain in his final year – was awarded the club’s Don Phelps Leadership Award, and named the top 20-year-old.
The defenceman spent four years playing junior hockey, the majority of it with the Drayton Valley Thunder and the Canucks.
He made 189 appearances in the AJHL, scoring 81 points (36 and 45 assists) with his best season being the 2015/16 campaign, which saw him bag 27 points (14 goals, 13 assists) in 60 games.
His aggressive and gritty style of play also saw him amass 262 penalty minutes over the course of his time in Junior A.
Some career highlights for the 21-year-old – who is now looking to go on to post-secondary school somewhere in Calgary – include appearances in both the Western Canada Cup, the national RBC Cup, as well as a satellite game in Cochrane between the Canucks and Whitecourt Wolverines on Feb. 21, which ended in a 3-2 Canucks shootout win.
