Former Edge School Mountaineer Jake Bean was selected 13th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft on June 24 in Buffalo, New York.
The 18-year-old Calgary native had been playing with the Calgary Hitmen for the last two seasons and was the first Western Hockey League (WHL) player selected in the draft.
The 6’1” 171 lb defenceman is an intelligent and shifty player who is known for his good decision-making on the ice as well as his panache, poise and puck carrying ability.
Every mock draft and expert prediction had Bean going in the top 20 prospects overall, and he wasn’t disappointed.
“I’m definitely grateful for the opportunity,” Bean said. “It’s nice to know where you’re going to start your future.
“To be the first one (out of the WHL) was pretty cool, there are a lot of good players out west.”
Bean is the 12th player in Hitmen history to go in the first round of the draft (and the 51st overall), with Jake Virtanen being the last first-rounder from the club going to the Vancouver Canucks with the sixth pick in the 2014 draft.
The blue-liner is coming off a breakout campaign where he sniped 24 goals, a franchise record. He finished his WHL career with 119 games played, recording 103 points (29 goals, 74 assists) in his time with Calgary.
