Cochrane Curling Club recently hosted their annual Junior Bonspiel over the weekend of Dec. 4-6.

Twenty teams in total took part in the event.

12 teams participating in the Bantam event (Under-15) and eight in the Juvenile category (Under-18).

“Most of the teams weren’t just from Cochrane but from Calgary, Okotoks, and area,” said Larry Cinnamon, organizer and Junior Curling Coordinator for the Calgary Youth Curling Association. “There was a lot of variety.

“Youth curling has steadily been growing in Cochrane every year since I’ve been involved with it (which has been five years).”

Why does Cinnamon think that is the case?

“Mainly because of all the different, extensive coverage on television,” he said.

“I know that my kids (who both curl) were first introduced to the sport when it was on at the Olympics.

“Seeing that made them want to try curling.

“I think it was the same for a lot of others as well.”

Winners at this weekend’s bonspiel were Team Louie from the North Hill Curling Club in the Bantam A category with Team Waite from the Huntington Hills Curling Club finishing runner-up.

Bantam B event winner was Team Lawrence from the Acadia Recreation Centre Curling Club.

Runner-up was Team Cinnamon from the Cochrane Curling Club.
