The Links of GlenEagles has left a lasting impression on Daniel Miernicki.
He won his first career Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada event at the Cochrane track, rolling in a 35-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to take the ATB Financial Classic title Aug. 2.
The Santee, Calif., native finished at -17, 263 ( 64-66-69-64) winning $31,500 in the process.
The win punctuated one of the more exhausting tournaments the 25-year-old can recall playing.
“First off, it’s really hilly,” he said of The Links of GlenEagles track that was playing just over 7,000 yards, par-70 for the ATB Financial Classic. “I’m exhausted. The course itself, it’s difficult in the sense that there’s so much elevation change. The 16th hole, in the yardage book, it’s down 45 yards. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen that before.
“Distance control is huge. I hit the ball really well and that’s probably why I’m here with you guys (media) now.”
And he won it with a breathtaking birdie putt on the 18th hole in the final round. Top Canadian was Sherwood Park’s Danny Sahl, who finished one stroke back of Miernicki. Airdrie’s Riley Fleming finished tied for 57th at 2-under, 278.
