Cochrane firefighters are hoping just to keep up at this weekend’s charity hockey game against a team filled with NHL players.
“I think we got five or 10 minutes in us,” joked Cochrane Fire Department Lt. Marlin Glaspey. “We’ll do our best.”
Saturday’s fundraising event will transform the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre into a National Hockey League-style arena – with former LA Kings’ Charlie Simmer, Tony Stiles of the Calgary Flames, defenseman Mark Astley and Detroit Red Wings’ Dennis Polonich taking to the ice.
To even it up, the Cochrane Firefighters Community Society is bringing some ringers onto its team – three National Collegiate Athletic Association female hockey players and the captain of the Chinook Hockey League’s Stoney Plain Eagles, Tanner House.
The puck drops at 2 p.m., with Joes and pros warming up by about 1:30 p.m. Cochrane singer Lexi Strate – fresh off her win at the Western Canadian Music Awards – will belt out the national anthem.
Tickets are $10 and are still available either at the door or beforehand at the sports centre, Killarney’s and the Cochrane Protective Services Centre, online at www.silkea.com or by emailing [email protected]. The afternoon matchup will raise money for families who need help paying for expensive hockey registration.
The fun-filled day continues into the evening, with a free of charge family-friendly social. No tickets are required to mix with players after the game at Killarney’s.
“We’ll looking at a good event and to raise some money for minor hockey,” said Glaspey.
