Two female hockey players from the Cochrane area have been selected to play for the Zone 2 team at the Alberta Winter Games.
The Games which are scheduled to take place Feb. 13-16 in Medicine Hat, bring many of the province’s top youth athletes together to compete in multiple sports.
It is the first time that left-winger Jessica Martens and right-winger Sarah Wozniewicz (both of whom play for the Bantam AAA Rocky Mountain Raiders) have made the trip to the Games.
“We’re both pretty excited to have made it onto the team,” said Martens.
“I feel pretty good about it,” Wozniewicz said. “It’s going to be a fun experience, and the opportunity of a lifetime.”
Why did the pair think they made the cut for the Zone 2 team?
“I feel like the main reason for me is that the coaches see I am a hard worker, and always battle hard,” Martens related.
“For me, I think it’s my playmaking skills, since I’m not the biggest goal scorer,” said Wozniewicz.
As for individual goals the pair have set for themselves, Martens hopes that, “we can make it to the final game and hopefully win gold, along with picking up a couple points along the way.”
