Piranhas wrap up meet with personal bests

The Cochrane Piranhas Swim Club wrapped up its second last regular season meet in style over the weekend of July 22 and 23 in Canmore.

The Cochrane Piranhas Swim Club wrapped up its second last regular season meet in style over the weekend of July 22 and 23 in Canmore.

Thirty-one swimmers from the club attended the event, with several achieving best times and reaching other milestones.

Superstar Ben Barclay continued his outstanding season, winning all four categories he participated in – the 100m individual medley, 50m butterfly, 25m butterfly, and the 50m backstroke in the boys ages nine and 10 category.

His older brother Jake also had a solid meet, picking up a third place finish in the boys (ages 13 and 14) 100m freestyle event, as well as a couple fifth and six place finishes in the 100m fly, 50m backstroke, and 50m breast stroke competitions.

Nicole Gross came away a first place winner in the girls (ages 13 and 14) 100m freestyle and second in the 100m fly event.

Her older sister Stephanie continued their family’s fine form with a third place finish in all of her events in the girls ages 15 to 17 category, including the 100m individual medley, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 1,500m freestyle.

Bryson Hammer placed second in the boys (ages 11 and 12) 200m individual medley event, while Max Kruger had an outstanding meet, finishing first in the boys (ages 11 and 12) 200m individual medley, and second in the 100m breaststroke and 50m fly events.

Sarah Nusl was another swimmer who continued her stellar season, cleaning up with first place finishes in the girls (ages 13 and 14) 100m fly and 100m back stroke events, along with second place finishes in the 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke.

Kade Peterson achieved a third place position in the boys (ages seven and eight) backstroke event.

The Swedlo brothers (Connor, Duncan, and Eric) all continued to show they are some of the best in the business as they all picked up first place finishes.

Connor swam to a first place finish in the boys (ages 15 to 17) 100m backstroke, also taking a second place in the 100m freestyle, and third in both the 100m individual medley and 50m freestyle.

Not to be outdone by his older brother, Eric captured two first place finishes in the boys (ages 13 and 14) 100m and 50m breaststroke competitions.

Oldest brother Duncan swam in the boys 18 and over category also picking up two first place positions in the 200m individual medley and 200m freestyle events.

The Piranhas also picked up some solid results in team relay events, with five of their teams bagging top three podium positions.

The girls 17 and under side consisting of Nusl, Darci Petersen, and Nicole and Stephanie Gross picked up first place in the 200m freestyle event.

The boys 17 and under team made up of Jake Barclay, Max Kruger, and Eric and Connor Swedlo also took first place in the 200m medley relay.

Another girls 17 and under side (Nusl, Natalie Barreto-Waringer, and Nicole and Stephanie Gross), managed to pick up a second place finish in the 200m medley relay event.

The boys 12 and under group consisting of Aaron Swedlo, Bryson Hammer, Ben Barclay, and Quinn Fitzsimmons came second in the 200m medley relay competition.

Mackenize Banfield, Isabella Barreto-Waringer, Sydney Carnegie, and Kaitlyn Eiserman captured third place in the girls 10 and under freestyle event.

The swimmers now have two weeks to recover from back-to-back meets before their last competition of the regular-season, which will be hosted by the Calgary Tritons Swim Club at the Talisman Centre in Calgary on Aug. 6.
