Region's athletes strong at zones

There were strong showings from Bow Valley and Springbank High Schools at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) South Central Zone Championships on Monday, but Cochrane High again proved to be king of the mountain.

There were strong showings from Bow Valley and Springbank High Schools at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) South Central Zone Championships on Monday, but Cochrane High again proved to be king of the mountain.

The Cobras were miles above the other teams in the 3A category, picking up 490 combined team points compared to second-place Holy Trinity Academy’s 261.

Bow Valley finished in sixth with 118, while Springbank came in ninth (87 points) out of the 14-school pool.

Cochrane High’s Skylar Sieben was a standout, managing to win the junior girls high jump, 80m hurdles, and Three-kilogram shot put categories.

Other junior Cobras girls Anne Roth (gold in pole vault), and Kara Kondrat (silver in the 100m dash) also booked places at provincials, as did Kseniya Parsons (second in one-kilogram discus), and the 4x100m relay team.

In intermediate girls-level competitions, Sarah Moore of the Springbank Phoenix was on fire, picking up first in the 1,500m run, and second in the 3,000m.

At the senior level, Alanna Tillotson of the Bobcats, finished with silver in both the girls 100m dash, and 80m hurdles.

Cochrane High had a strong showing, with both their senior girls 4x100m relay (first-place) and 4x400 relay (second-place) qualifying for provincials.

Cobra Taylor Chace picked up a silver in the senior girls four-kilogram shot put competition, Bobcat Madi Lethebe will be happy with her performance, picking up three silvers in the 100m and 800m dash open outdoor pentathlon as well as the girls long jump open outdoor pentathlon.

On the boys side of the spectrum, Springbank’s Alex Royall finished runner-up in both the junior 800m and 1,500m competitions, while both Nicholas Petrone (junior high jump and triple jump) and Thomas Robitaille (junior pole vault) grabbed second.

Mitchell Young (Springbank) picked up silver in the 700g javelin category, while Cochrane High’s Brett Conlon won the five-kilogram shot put by 0.03m to round things out for the juniors.

The Cochrane schools had a strong showing in the boys intermediate level, as Cobra Callum Lympany led the way picking up first and second-place finishes (400m dash and 800m run). Teammate Kehinde Alawiye finished runner-up in both the 200m dash and long jump, losing the latter by a tight 0.19m.

Matthew Clooten and Justin Sambu (both Cobras) dominated the intermediate five-kilogram shot put finishing first and second, sealing their trip to provincials, while teammate Scott Hegarty (100m hurdles) and the Cochrane High 4x100m relay team took gold in their respective categories.

At the senior boys level, Cobra and reigning provincial champion Tae Gordon continued his winning streak in the 700g javelin, throwing a personal-best 48.17m. Teammates Erik Nusl and Cole Noble came first and second in the 200m dash, with Nusl also taking a second silver in the pole vault, while Kael Kelly came second in the high jump.

The Cochrane High team also qualified in both the 4x400m (first) and 4x100m (second) relays, while Tomas Rigaux won silver in the long jump, as did Ethan Forrest in the 800g javelin.

Bow Valley’s Reed Thomson finished runner-up in the 100m and 300m hurdles, and teammate Landon Murphy did the same in the 3,000m run.

ASAA Provincials now run June 3 and 4 in Edmonton at Foote Field.
