Two Cochrane teens helped the Calgary Jr. Roughnecks bring home gold from the fifth annual Junior National Lacrosse League (NLL) Tournament in Oakville, Ont. Aug. 25 to 27.

Nicholas Drennan and Nathan Lam played for the inaugural Midget Roughnecks that defeated the Toronto Jr. Rock 7-5 in the finals to claim the tournament championship.

The tournament features Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget squads from teams representing not only the Roughnecks, but the Rock, Colorado Mammoth, Saskatchewan Rush, Vancouver Stealth, New England Black Wolves, Georgia Swarm, Buffalo Bandits, Rochester Knighthawks as well as teams from Edmonton and Philadelphia.

The Midget Roughnecks had just one loss in their first four games of the tournament, and looked like the team to beat going into the playoffs. The team breezed by the Rochester Jr. Knighthawks 9-5 after losing to them 6-5 in round robin play, before winning the back-and-forth affair with the Jr. Rock to take first place.

It was a fairly dominant tournament for the Calgary squad as they had the tournament-leading scorer, and they outscored their opponents 55-28 in the six-game tournament.

Lam finished sixth on the team in scoring with four goals and two assists in six contests, while Drennan scored two goals and had one assist in the tournament.

Both Drennan and Lam attend Cochrane High School and play for the Predators Lacrosse club as well as the Rockyview Rage.
