Several Cochrane area female hockey players, including Rocky Mountain Raiders AAA midget players Megan Campbell and Kara Kondrat were among 80 players initially invited to the Under 18 Team Alberta camp for the upcoming 2016 Women’s National Championship in Spruce Grove, May 26 to 29. Only one advanced to the next round of selection:

Hockey Alberta announced on Friday that Taylor Sawka would be one of 46 players advancing to the next round of trials, which are set to take place July 12 to 17 in Camrose.

From there, the forward – whose 15-year-old brother Tanner is also a Mountaineer hockey player – will look to continue impressing as a cut will again be made, with the final 20-women squad is named at a fall camp on Sept. 23 to 25 in Calgary before moving on to the tournament in Regina on Nov. 9 to 13.

The Cochranite – who was the gold medal winning captain of the Big Country Zone 2 team at the 2014 Alberta Winter Games – recorded six points (three goals, three assists) in 13 games with the Mountaineers in the six-team Junior Women’s Hockey League (JWHL) during the 2015/16 season.
