It’s been a mixed bag of results for the Rockyview Silvertips so far this season.
The junior ladies lacrosse team started out their Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League (RMLL) campaign with a 1-2 record after their first three games, and since then, their inconsistent record has continued as they roll into their next fixture with a 3-4 record.
On May 13, the fourth-place Tips hosted the Calgary Cardinals at Plainsmen Arena in Airdrie.
Despite being short on the bench, the home side outscored the visitors 8-6 to seal a much-needed win in a week where the team played some tightly contested matches.
The Tips came out with all guns blazing as Annie Morrison (with the hat-trick), Taylor McElroy (two), Jaimie Betterton, Erin Greenan, and Jessie Crossley all got on the scoreboard.
Betterton, Crossley, McElroy, Greenan, Christina Olver (two), Shaelyn Lewis, and goalie Mikayla Miller all contributed helpers.
The next day, first-place Capital Region Saints – who are undefeated in seven – came to the Plainsmen to take on the Tips.
Despite having a full bench, with Zoe Baergen returning from injury, and Bailey Hamm playing up from Kneehill Midget Lacrosse, the team fell behind after two quick Saints goals.
The home side battled back with two goals from Crossley (McElroy, Betterton, and Hamm getting assists) to tie things up, but the Saints showed their offensive might, grabbing another brace to go up 4-2 after the first period.
The Tips came back strong in the second with Baergen scoring from Olver and Hamm, to give her side a glimmer of hope, before Olver scored unassisted to even things up.
Things went back and forth with the Saints again taking the lead before Baergen answered on the power play (Morrison, McElroy with the helpers). The visitors again replied and the teams broke for the third with things 5-4 in the visitors favour.
The Tips served six penalties in the third, killing all but one.
Miller went down halfway through the period with an injury, but rallied and finished the game with a bum knee.
Unfortunately, the period belonged to the Saints, as they scored four unanswered to take the contest 10-5.
The Tips may be bruised and battered but they will be back on June 3 to face the Red Deer Rage at Plainsman Arena. Start-time is 8:30 p.m.
