Thunder roared through the Calgary Catholic Junior High School Division Cross Country Championships last week, as the St. Timothy Junior/Senior High team qualified a record 11 athletes to the upcoming Meet of Champions.

“I was very impressed at how they did. We had some pretty solid results,” said St. Tim’s Thunder coach Travis Cummings. “We’ve got a really good core of some pretty strong runners.”

Cummings said the junior high team “has been fueled mightily by some exceptional girl power,” including standout performances from Grade 7 girls Sophia Preece and Holly Moores – who placed first and second – as well as first-place finisher Grade 8 student Darci Petersen.

“She had a pretty dominating win,” Cummings said.

The Junior High Meet of Champions will take place in Calgary on Oct. 6.

Meanwhile, hordes of senior high runners will converge in Cochrane one day earlier, on Oct. 5, for the Cross Country City Championship and Provincial Zone Challenge Meet at the Cochrane Agricultural Society.

The Ag Grounds will also play host to the Alberta Schools Athletic Association Provincial Cross Country Championship on Oct 15.

More than 2,100 athletes are expected over the course of the two events, which will cap off the 2016 cross-country season.
