A record-breaking number of curlers shot, swept and slid at this year’s Super Senior Squares bonspiel.
Co-ordinator Douglas Campbell said 30 teams and 120 players from Inglewood, Calgary, Springbank, Airdrie and more took to the ice over the four-day tournament, which took place last week at the Cochrane Curling Club.
The bonspiel was open to curlers from ages 50 to 70+, and winners took home $4,000 in prize money.
Campbell said the tournament is popular with so many people because teams are organized by age group and skill level.
“Everybody’s playing against a peer. Nobody wants to play against a professional and get trounced,” he said. “That really adds to the levity. Generally, participation and fellowship are the driving forces of this bonspiel.”
While this year’s seventh annual event was a huge success, Campbell said he hopes the 2017 tournament will be even more robust, as the new curling facility at Spray Lake Sawmills Sports Centre will open up a total of six rinks for play.
