They went for the three-peat and ran away with it.

St. Timothy School varsity boy’s cross-country running team won the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association (CSHSAA) banner Oct. 7 in Cochrane.

Running in their home town on a four-kilometre course at Cochrane and District Agricultural Society, the 18-runner Thunder team scored 969 points, edging Calgary powerhouse Sir William Aberhart High School (816 points) for the City varsity boy’s title.

“You know what? It was like watching the whole program come full circle” said Thunder XC running coach Travis Cummings. “It was really good closure for those guys because most of them I’ve coached since Grade 7. And they did it. We said in Grade 7 if you guys do this you might be able to win three championships. And they won it all the last three years through.

“It was really cool watching that. Can’t say anything else other than that. Wow. This is awesome.”

On the girl’s side, senior Sophia Nowicki claimed individual silver to add to Thunder’s City-championship medal count.

“I was going for third,” she said of her race tactics. “I didn’t know if I could get silver. Then the other girls started falling back on the second lap on the hill. I train a lot on hills, so that’s when I took silver.

“I would prefer something like 7K. More distance. Pacing and distance is my thing.”

In junior high school cross-country running Oct. 8 in Calgary, Thunder’s Darci Peterson took the individual City title in the Grade 7 girl’s race. Sarah Dumais placed third in the Grade 9 girl’s race, her third career medal in junior-high racing.
