The St. Timothy’s Thunder Junior High Cross Country team ran their CSSD Divisional qualifier on Sept. 26, with 13 athletes placing in the top 10 to qualify for the Calgary City Meet of Champions on Oct. 5 at Ascension of Our Lord School.
“The amount of students qualifying is a new school record and it is looking like the Thunder harriers might end up coming home with some more hardware when all is said and done,” Thunder head coach Travis Cummings said.
“There were some outstanding individual results from today, including three gold medals.”
Darci Petersen won the Grade 9 girls race in blowout fashion, Holly Moores did much of the same in the Grade 8 girls race. Newcomer Ethan Horb won the Grade 7 boys race as well. Continuing with Grade 9 girls Grace Boston followed up her teammate with a silver medal performance and Miranda Hobbs and Emily Carvalho placed fifth and sixth respectively. The Grade 8 girls scored a podium sweep, Sofia Preece followed her teammate, Moores, with silver and Makenna Myatt won bronze in a superb effort. Rounding out the top 10 girls results, Allison Bentley placed sixth overall in the Grade 7 girls race, also punching her ticket to the Meet of Champions.
The boys side of the team did not disappoint. Liam McCullough won silver and Alex Aguilar won bronze in the Grade 9 boys race. Teammate Lucas Rott placed a close seventh. Trenton Spademan, cracked the top 10 in his debut race placing sixth, following in the footsteps of his older siblings Brenek and Mikenna, both standout track athletes for the St. Tim’s High School squad.
The junior high squad will also be sending a select group to the Athletics Alberta provincial cross-country championship on Nov. 4 in Wetaskawin. The girls team will be looking to defend or improve on their provincial silver medal from 2016.
On the high school scene, Calgary City Championships is Oct. 11 in Cochrane at the Agricultural Grounds and ASAA Provincial Championships is Oct. 21 in Edmonton. The high school squad will be running several prep meets before these big events.
